In a significant demonstration of Nigeria’s commitment to global peace and security, Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar has announced five additional pledges to the United Nations Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System. This move reinforces the nation’s dedication to international peace operations and underscores its proactive role in promoting stability worldwide.

Speaking at the ongoing Plenary High-Level Pledging Session of the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025 in Berlin, Germany, Minister Abubakar highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing contributions to global peace efforts. According to Mati Ali, Press Attaché to the Honourable Minister, Abubakar emphasized the country’s continued rotation of the Base Protection Force deployed to the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei and the Formed Police Unit serving in the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia.

Nigeria’s leadership in regional peace efforts was also spotlighted, particularly under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU). Notable interventions in Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau demonstrate the nation’s unwavering commitment to fostering stability in the West African sub-region.

The Minister renewed Nigeria’s existing peacekeeping pledges and announced the additional commitments, solidifying the nation’s position as a key player in international peace operations. This development is expected to further enhance the United Nations’ capacity to respond to emerging security challenges worldwide.
