DUTSE, Jigawa State – A wedding celebration has tragically soured in Jigawa State, culminating in the death of a bride just days after her marriage and the subsequent arrest of her groom and three of his friends. The Jigawa State Police Command is now conducting a full-scale investigation into the disturbing incident.
The grim events unfolded in Tungo village, Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area, on the night of April 26th, 2025. According to a police press release dated April 27th, 2025, authorities were alerted around 10:00 PM to a serious situation at the couple’s new matrimonial home.
Preliminary investigations suggest a deeply troubling scenario. The groom, identified as 20-year-old Auwal Abdulwahab, is alleged to have conspired with three friends – Nura Basiru (20), Muttaka Lawan (20), and Hamisu Musa (20), all from the same village – to enter the couple’s home. It is alleged their intention was to coerce the bride into non-consensual sexual activity. Police reports indicate the bride had disagreed with her husband regarding marital relations since their wedding day.
During the alleged incident, the bride reportedly raised an alarm but tragically died in the process.
Responding swiftly to the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Sule Tankarkar Division led a team to the scene. The victim’s (Basira Lawan-17-18 years old) body was evacuated to Gumel General Hospital, where a doctor on call tragically confirmed her death. Her body was subsequently released to her grieving family for burial.
Police spokesman SP Lawan Shiisu Adam confirmed that all four suspects, including the groom Auwal Abdulwahab and his three friends, have been apprehended. They are currently in custody undergoing what police describe as a “discreet investigation.”
The severity of the case prompted the Commissioner of Police for Jigawa State, CP AT Abdullahi, psc, to order the immediate transfer of the investigation to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Dutse. Authorities stated that the suspects could face serious charges, potentially including criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The incident has understandably caused significant distress and concern within the local community and beyond. Speaking to Public Eye News in Dutse, Comrade Musbahu Basirka of the Child Protection Network (CPN) Jigawa confirmed the organization is closely monitoring the case. “We are following this heartbreaking incident with keen interest,” Basirka stated. “We urge the public to remain vigilant and implore community leaders and families to redouble efforts in promoting strong moral values among our youth to prevent such tragedies.”
The Jigawa State Police Command has assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and all suspects will be prosecuted accordingly once the investigation concludes.
