In a significant move to strengthen ties with traditional institutions, the House Committee on FCT Area Council and Ancillary Matters, chaired by Rt. Hon. Fred Agbedi, Ph.D., held its inaugural meeting with the Traditional Rulers Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) at the National Assembly Complex on Monday, March 24, 2025.

The meeting, conducted in line with the provisions of Order 20, Rule 48(2)(b) of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives, aimed to exercise oversight on chieftaincy matters. Rt. Hon. Fred Agbedi acknowledged the vital role traditional rulers play in cultural preservation, security, conflict resolution, and community development.

Agbedi commended the traditional rulers’ efforts in fostering peace and stability within the FCT, emphasizing that their contributions to local governance remain invaluable. The Traditional Rulers Council requested the allocation of 5% of funds designated for Area Councils to support traditional institutions. However, Agbedi noted that the disbursement of such funds is governed by statutory provisions and budgetary frameworks, which prioritize sectors like infrastructure, healthcare, education, and social welfare.

This meeting marked a significant step toward strengthening collaboration between the House Committee and the Traditional Rulers Council. Both parties expressed a commitment to addressing issues affecting the FCT’s traditional institutions.
