Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant move following a presidential emergency proclamation, the House of Representatives has officially inaugurated a 21-member Adhoc Committee tasked with legislating for Rivers State in place of the suspended State House of Assembly.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, presided over the inauguration ceremony held at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja earlier today, Tuesday. The newly formed committee comprises members carefully selected from across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones, ensuring broad representation in this crucial undertaking.

Addressing the newly appointed committee members, Speaker Abbas emphasized the gravity of their responsibility and the critical need for impartiality. He urged them to remain non-partisan and unbiased as they carry out their mandate.

“This is a call to legislate with the sole aim of ensuring good governance, peace, and the continued prosperity of Rivers State,” Speaker Abbas stated firmly. “Your task is to oversee Rivers State following Mr. President’s emergency proclamation. You must not be partisan or biased in your deliberations and decisions.”

The unprecedented step by the House of Representatives underscores the seriousness of the situation in Rivers State, prompting federal intervention to ensure the continuity of governance. The Adhoc Committee is now empowered to make laws and oversee the affairs of the oil-rich state during the suspension of its elected assembly.

The composition of the committee, drawing from diverse regions, signals an intent to provide balanced and fair governance during this interim period. The Speaker’s strong emphasis on non-partisanship will be closely watched as the committee begins its work in navigating the complex political landscape of Rivers State.

This development marks a pivotal moment in the political affairs of Rivers State, with the national legislative body stepping in to maintain order and governance in the absence of the state’s assembly. The actions of this Adhoc Committee will be crucial in shaping the immediate future of the state.
