Former President Goodluck Jonathan has strongly condemned the handling of the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, accusing President Bola Tinubu of “abuse of power”. Jonathan’s remarks come after Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing political and security instability, and the subsequent suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the state’s House of Assembly.

Jonathan, who spoke at the annual colloquium organised by the Haske Satumari Foundation in Abuja, expressed concern over the actions taken by the executive, legislature, and judiciary, which he believes are “pretending to sleep” while knowing the right course of action. He warned that the abuse of power will have lasting consequences and urged those in positions of authority to recognize their collective responsibility in governance.

The former president’s comments are seen as a significant intervention in the ongoing crisis, which has attracted widespread criticism from stakeholders across the country. The Rivers State crisis has raised concerns over the erosion of democratic principles in Nigeria, with many calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
