KANO STATE GOVERNMENT REVERSES NAME OF YUSUF MAITAMA SULE UNIVERSITY, EXTENDS RETIREMENT AGE FOR PROFESSORS

In a significant development, the Kano State Government has reversed the name of the state-owned Yusuf Maitama Sule University to its original name, Northwest University. This decision was made at the end of the 21st Council meeting of the Kano State Council held on November 29th, 2024.
The university was initially renamed in honor of the late Yusuf Maitama Sule, a renowned diplomat, politician, and traditional title holder, who passed away on July 3, 2017.

✓The state government has approved the establishment of a Yusuf Maitama Sule College of Education and Advanced Studies in Ghari Local Government Area.

✓Extension of Retirement Age
In a related development, the Kano State Government has approved the extension of the retirement age for professors in universities from 65 to 70 years. Academic staff in other higher institutions will now retire at 65 instead of 60. This reform aims to enhance academic staff retention and continuity in higher education institutions.
