Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, has accused self-proclaimed northern stakeholders of meddling in the selection and fielding of candidates during presidential elections. This interference, Kwankwaso alleges, undermines democracy and causes disunity among people, leading to the election of incompetent candidates.

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, emphasized that regional leaders should learn from past election experiences and refrain from influencing the candidate selection process. He condemned the practice, stating that it creates discord among people and is driven by selfish motives.

The NNPP candidate cited the 2019 general elections, where the northwest produced seven candidates, as an example of how stakeholders prioritize their own interests over the region’s. Kwankwaso stressed that it’s essential to promote the interests of the people, rather than following selfish dictates.

This development highlights the ongoing debate about the influence of regional stakeholders in Nigerian politics and the need for transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
