Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria is set to deepen its defence and security ties with the European Union (EU) in a determined effort to tackle the pressing challenges of terrorism and banditry. This commitment was underscored by the Honourable Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar CON mni, during a significant meeting held yesterday, Monday, April 14th, 2025, in Ship House, Abuja.

Minister Badaru warmly received Mr. Casmin Dirban, the Director of the Peace Partnership and Crisis Management Department of the European External Action Service in Brussels, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced collaboration in the realm of security and defence.

“We must work with greater intensity to strengthen our security and defence collaboration and relationship,” asserted Minister Badaru, highlighting the Nigerian government’s proactive stance in seeking robust international partnerships to safeguard the nation.

The discussions between Minister Badaru and Mr. Dirban centered on bolstering cooperation to effectively combat the persistent threats of terrorism and banditry that affect various parts of Nigeria. The Minister passionately advocated for a focused and intentional approach to identify and cultivate more avenues for joint efforts on crucial defence and security matters.

Echoing the sentiment for stronger ties, Mr. Casmin Dirban, accompanied by the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Gautier Mignot, acknowledged the existing positive bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and the EU. He conveyed the EU’s keen interest in fostering even stronger relations, recognizing Nigeria’s pivotal role in regional security.

This high-level meeting signals a significant step towards a more robust partnership between Nigeria and the European Union in addressing shared security concerns. Minister Badaru’s proactive engagement underscores the nation’s commitment to seeking international collaboration to enhance its defence capabilities and ensure the safety and security of its citizens.
