Nigeria Military Debunks Allegations Over Invictus Games Visa Requests

Abuja, Nigeria – February 17, 2025 – The Defence Headquarters of Nigeria has strongly refuted recent allegations regarding the Nigerian military’s visa requests for the prestigious Invictus Games in Vancouver, Canada. In a statement issued by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the military clarified the circumstances surrounding the visa approvals and denials that affected the nation’s representation at the event.
Background of Nigeria’s Participation
Nigeria, the sole African nation invited to compete in the globally acclaimed Invictus Games, had assembled a dedicated team of 3 officers and 21 athletes, including a team physiotherapist. The event, known for honoring wounded and injured service personnel, was an opportunity for Nigeria to showcase its resilience and commitment to rehabilitation through sports.
Despite the military’s meticulous preparations, only 14 members of the team were granted visas. Unfortunately, the team leader, captain, and physiotherapist were among those denied entry, alongside seven athletes who were poised to bring glory to the nation.
Outstanding Performance Despite Setbacks
Despite the challenges, Nigeria’s contingent delivered a stellar performance, securing gold, silver, and bronze medals, cementing the country’s reputation on the global stage. Their success underscored the resilience and determination of Nigerian service personnel, further elevating the country’s profile in the international sports community.
Chief of Defence Staff’s Commitment to Troop Welfare
General Christopher Gwabin Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, had planned to attend the event, reinforcing his commitment to the mental and physical well-being of Nigerian troops. His presence would have served as a morale booster for the athletes and the broader military community.
The Defence Headquarters also highlighted General Musa’s ongoing initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of service personnel, particularly those injured in the line of duty. One such initiative is the Invictus Foundation Centre—currently under construction—the first of its kind in Africa. This facility will provide vital rehabilitation and mental health support for wounded troops, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to their long-term care.
Call for Public Support Against Misinformation
In response to recent misleading reports, the Defence Headquarters urges the public to disregard the unfounded allegations and instead support the Armed Forces’ efforts to enhance national security and the welfare of military personnel. The dissemination of accurate information is critical in fostering national unity and recognizing the sacrifices of those who risk their lives for the country.
“The dedication and sacrifices of our service personnel deserve recognition and support. Any attempt to undermine these efforts with false narratives is not only unfair but detrimental to national cohesion,” said Brigadier General Tukur Gusau in the statement.
Conclusion
As Nigeria continues to play a vital role on the global stage, particularly in military sports and rehabilitation initiatives, it remains imperative to celebrate and support its servicemen and women. The achievements at the Invictus Games serve as a testament to the unwavering spirit of the Nigerian Armed Forces, despite challenges beyond their control.
