Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Nuclear Non-Proliferation: Minister Badaru

Abuja, Nigeria – In a bold statement at the United Nations General Assembly, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Abubakar Badaru CON, mni, reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to the Treaty of Pelindaba, a crucial agreement that designates Africa as a nuclear-weapon-free zone.
Speaking at the launch of the Friends of Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty hosted by Japan, Minister Badaru emphasized the importance of preventing the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons and other explosive devices. He stressed that Nigeria would continue to play a leading role in advocating for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation on the African continent.
“Africa’s commitment to a nuclear-free zone is a testament to our dedication to peace and security,” Minister Badaru declared. “We will continue to work tirelessly to strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) regime and support the proposed Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty (FMCT).”
The Minister’s remarks highlight Nigeria’s growing influence on the global stage as a champion of nuclear disarmament. By reaffirming its commitment to the Treaty of Pelindaba and supporting the FMCT, Nigeria is sending a clear message to the international community that it is committed to a peaceful and secure future for all.
