Abuja, Nigeria – In a bold statement at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, Nigeria’s Defense Minister, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, reiterated the country’s unwavering dedication to international peace and security.

Speaking at the Summit of the Future, Minister Badaru emphasized Nigeria’s long history of peacekeeping contributions, dating back to its involvement in the Congo in 1960. The West African nation has since deployed troops, provided financial aid, and shared logistical expertise to various African countries, including Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Recognizing the challenges posed by emerging security threats, particularly in the Sahel region, Minister Badaru called for a concerted global effort to address these issues. He urged the international community to prioritize the prevention of illicit financial flows, which often fuel kidnapping, banditry, and the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

In a significant call to action, Minister Badaru advocated for a more equitable representation of Africa on the United Nations Security Council. He argued that such a move would bolster global peace, inclusivity, and trust, reflecting the continent’s growing influence on the world stage.

As Nigeria continues to play a pivotal role in regional and global security, the country’s commitment to the United Nations and its peacekeeping efforts remains steadfast. Minister Badaru’s call for a more inclusive and effective UN Security Council underscores Nigeria’s aspiration for a more just and peaceful world.
