JOS, PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA – In a significant step towards restoring peace and security in Nigeria’s restive Plateau State, Defense Minister Alhaji Muhammadu Badaru Abubakar convened a high-level meeting with key stakeholders. The gathering, held at the 3rd Armoured Division Headquarters in Jos, brought together traditional rulers, community leaders, religious leaders, women and youth groups, and government officials.
Addressing the participants, Minister Abubakar expressed optimism about the state’s security situation, noting the recent improvements. However, he emphasized the need for sustained efforts to completely eradicate security challenges.
“Despite the progress made, we are committed to ensuring that Plateau State becomes a haven of peace,” the minister stated.
The meeting specifically focused on five local government areas – Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Mangu, Riyom, and Wase – which have been grappling with recurrent violence, including attacks, reprisal killings, theft, and destruction of farmlands.
Garba Abdullahi Muhammad, the Chairman of the GanAllah Fulani Association in Plateau State, highlighted the significance of the meeting, saying that participants were able to openly discuss their concerns and seek lasting peace.
Emmanuel Bala Mwolpun, the Chairman of Mangu Local Government Area, expressed confidence that the dialogue would pave the way for sustainable peace in the region.
Traditional rulers also voiced their support for the peace initiative. Ponzoh Johnson Jauro Magaji, the traditional ruler of Anaguta, stressed the importance of empowering traditional institutions to effectively address security challenges within their domains.
Retired Brigadier General Gagji Shippi, the Plateau State Governor’s Security Adviser, underscored the need for mutual understanding and tolerance among the various communities.
For over two decades, Plateau State has been plagued by communal clashes, resulting in significant loss of lives and property. This latest peace initiative is seen as a crucial step towards healing old wounds and fostering lasting harmony.
