Nigerian Democracy Working Group Condemns Reckless Judicial Actions in Kano

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Democracy Working Group (NDWG) has strongly condemned the recent actions of Federal High Court judges in Kano State, which it deems as a deliberate attempt to undermine Nigerian democracy and destabilize the peace and security of the state.
In a statement released today, the NDWG expressed its outrage over the judgment delivered by Justice Simon Amobeda, which dismissed the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KNSIEC) just days before the scheduled local government elections. The group described the judgment as “insensitive, anti-people, anti-democracy, and anti-social justice.
‘This reckless judicial intervention is a blatant disregard for the will of the people and a threat to the democratic process,” said Dr. Vincent Okpara Innocent, Convener of the NDWG. “It is a clear indication that some judges are more interested in serving their own interests than upholding the rule of law.
“The NDWG called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere Ekun, to take immediate action against Justice Amobeda and other judges who are engaging in such reckless behavior. The group also urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate the matter and take appropriate disciplinary measures.
“The Nigerian Judiciary must be held accountable for its actions,” said Dr. Idris A. Mohammed, Co-Convener of the NDWG. “We cannot allow a few bad apples to erode the public’s trust in our judicial system.
“The NDWG has vowed to mobilize over 1000 organizations across Nigeria to file a petition against Justice Amobeda and demand that his actions be reversed. The group also called on all Nigerians to stand united against this assault on democracy and to demand accountability from those who are undermining our nation’s progress.
