The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Jigawa State Directorate, has announced plans to commence a comprehensive statewide public enlightenment campaign on Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) as part of proactive measures to safeguard public health and prevent any potential outbreak in the state.

The initiative, which will cover all 27 Local Government Areas of Jigawa State, was unveiled by the State Director of NOA, Mallam Ahmed Tijjani Ibrahim, during a strategic meeting with management staff and Community Orientation and Mobilization Officers (COMOs) drawn from across the state.

Speaking at the meeting, Mallam Ahmed Tijjani Ibrahim emphasized the importance of public awareness and preparedness following reports of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

The NOA Director noted that while no Ebola case has been reported in Nigeria, it remains important for citizens to be informed about the disease and preventive measures without creating fear or panic.

“We must ensure that accurate information reaches the people. The goal is to encourage vigilance and preparedness, not panic,” he stated.

As part of the campaign, Community Orientation and Mobilization Officers have been directed to educate residents on the symptoms of Ebola, including fever, severe headache, body weakness, and other warning signs, while encouraging immediate medical attention for suspected cases.

The campaign will also focus on promoting good hygiene practices such as regular hand washing, the use of hand sanitizers, and adherence to public health guidelines.

According to the Agency, key locations identified for the awareness drive include markets, motor parks, schools, traditional institutions, palaces, churches, and mosques to ensure that critical health information reaches every segment of society.

The sensitization exercise will be conducted in collaboration with transport unions, community leaders, religious organizations, and educational institutions to maximize public outreach and engagement.

Mallam Ahmed Tijjani Ibrahim further disclosed that the Agency is working closely with the Jigawa State health authorities, particularly the disease control department, to ensure coordinated dissemination of accurate and timely information.

He described the campaign as a strategic non-pharmaceutical intervention aimed at strengthening public awareness and reducing the risk of disease transmission through education and community mobilization.

Public health experts have consistently identified awareness campaigns as one of the most effective tools in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, especially in areas where early detection and rapid response are critical.

The NOA’s initiative underscores the growing commitment of government agencies to public health preparedness and community resilience against emerging health threats.

As the campaign begins across Jigawa State, residents are being encouraged to remain informed, practice proper hygiene, and cooperate with health authorities in promoting a healthy and safe environment for all.
