Northern Youth Assembly Blasts Kwankwaso Over 2027 Alliance

The Northern Youth Assembly (NYA) has launched a scathing criticism of former Kano State Governor and NNPP leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, accusing him of abandoning the foundational principles of the Kwankwasiyya Movement through his reported political alliance with Peter Obi and the Obidient Movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a strongly worded statement signed by its Secretary-General, Hafiz Garba, the group described the alliance as a major departure from the values of northern identity, political dignity, and regional interests upon which the Kwankwasiyya Movement was built.
According to the Assembly, the Kwankwasiyya Movement gained popularity across Northern Nigeria through its emphasis on education, youth empowerment, scholarship programmes, social welfare initiatives, and advocacy for the advancement of northern communities.
The group argued that these ideals helped establish the movement as one of the most influential political platforms in Northern Nigeria over the past two decades.
However, the NYA contended that recent political developments have raised questions about whether the movement still represents the principles it originally championed.
The statement alleged that some supporters associated with the Obidient Movement had previously made comments viewed by many northern stakeholders as disrespectful to prominent historical figures, including the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto; Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa; and Islamic scholar Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio.
The Assembly maintained that any political partnership involving northern leaders should be accompanied by clear commitments to respect the historical, cultural, and religious values cherished by communities across the region.
“It is important for political leaders to remain consistent with the values and ideals that formed the foundation of their movements and earned them public trust,” the statement said.
The NYA further argued that Northern Nigerians are becoming increasingly interested not only in political alliances but also in the principles and convictions that underpin such partnerships.
The organization called on political leaders seeking support ahead of the 2027 elections to provide greater clarity on issues relating to national unity, regional interests, security, economic development, and cultural identity.
Political analysts believe the statement reflects the growing contest for influence and voter support ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 presidential election.
Observers note that political alliances, mergers, and realignments are likely to remain key features of Nigeria’s political landscape in the coming months as parties and influential figures position themselves for future electoral contests.
While supporters of various political camps continue to debate the implications of emerging alliances, stakeholders agree that issues of governance, national security, economic recovery, and social development will remain central to voter considerations across the country.
The intervention by the Northern Youth Assembly underscores the increasing importance of regional political sentiments and ideological debates as Nigeria gradually moves closer to the next general election cycle.
As political consultations continue nationwide, analysts say the ability of leaders to balance coalition-building with the preservation of their core political identities may prove decisive in shaping electoral outcomes in 2027.
