Minna, Niger State | August 3, 2025 The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has issued a strong condemnation against the Niger State Government following reported threats to shut down Badeggi FM 90.1, a privately owned radio station based in Minna. The Union also denounced the alleged plans to demolish the station’s building, describing the move as a violation of press freedom and due process.

In a statement signed by the NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the Union said the threats by the administration of Governor Umaru Bago represent an unconstitutional overreach and an intimidation tactic aimed at stifling independent journalism.

“The Nigeria Union of Journalists views the reported threats against Badeggi FM with grave concern. Such actions undermine democratic governance and violate the constitutional rights of journalists and media institutions,” the statement read.

The NUJ emphasized that only the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has the statutory mandate to license, regulate, and sanction broadcast stations in Nigeria. It warned that no state government has the authority to unilaterally interfere in the affairs of a licensed media organization.

“Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy,” Abdullahi said. “We urge Governor Umaru Bago to immediately withdraw the threat of closure and demolition of Badeggi FM and allow any alleged infractions to be addressed through the proper regulatory channels.”

The Union called on civil society organizations, professional groups, and the public to stand in solidarity with journalists and media outlets facing harassment. It reiterated its commitment to safeguarding press freedom and ensuring that media professionals operate without fear of political interference.

Badeggi FM 90.1 has not publicly responded to the alleged threats as of the time of this report. Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Niger State Government were still ongoing.
