Marking a significant milestone for journalism in Northern Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) today officially inaugurated the Kano Online Media Chapel, the first of its kind in the region’s 19 states. The historic event signals the formal integration of digital media practitioners into the union’s fold, following a 2022 constitutional amendment. Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, publisher of Independent Post, was sworn in as the chapel’s pioneer Chairman, vowing to champion professionalism and ethical standards in the digital age.

The inauguration ceremony was overseen by veteran journalist Alhaji Ahmad Aminu, chairman of the inauguration committee, who brought his fifty years of experience to bear. He emphasized the undeniable role of online media in modern information dissemination while cautioning practitioners to prioritize reliability, objectivity, and verification. Alhaji Aminu urged the new chapel members to collaborate constructively with Kano’s established traditional media outlets and specifically addressed concerns about the tone of online discourse in the state, calling for adherence to ethical codes and societal norms.
Kano State Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, hailed the inauguration as a “historic day” and lauded the efforts to unify online journalists. “We support this process and aim to bring reforms to the information sector,” he stated, acknowledging challenges in the media space. “What is happening… is quite unfortunate, and we cannot change it unless we bring critical stakeholders together. We do not want Kano to be left behind.” He assured the chapel of the government’s necessary support, emphasizing unity as a key pillar.

In a compelling acceptance speech, the newly inaugurated Chairman, Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, articulated a clear vision for the Kano Online Media Chapel. Expressing deep gratitude, he acknowledged the responsibility entrusted to him. “The formation of the Kano Online Media Chapel is a bold recognition of the transformative role digital platforms now play,” Dangambo declared. “We are not here to compete with traditional media—we are here to complement, innovate, and lead the way in responsible, ethical, and impactful journalism in the digital age.”
Demonstrating his dedication, Chairman Dangambo pledged, “I am committed to building a chapel that upholds professionalism, promotes unity among practitioners, and protects the interests of our members.” He emphasized pursuing capacity building and partnerships to empower members in the rapidly evolving media landscape. “We will strive to earn the trust of the public, ensuring that the content we produce upholds the highest standards of truth, fairness, and integrity,” he affirmed, highlighting the duty of online journalists to inspire societal progress. He extended sincere thanks to Commissioner Waiya, the national NUJ leadership, and the NUJ Kano council for their pivotal support.
The oath of office was administered by the NUJ Kano Council Chairman, Comrade Suleiman A. Dederi, to the following executives:
- Chairman: Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo (Independent Post)
- Vice Chairman: Khadija Aliyu (Paradigm News)
- Treasurer: Abbas Yushau Yusuf (Nigeria Tracker)

- Auditor: Musa Ahmad Durumin Iya (Alifijir News)
- Assistant Secretary: Zahrau Nasir (Daily Watch 24)
- Financial Secretary: Zainab Abdurrahman Mai Agogo (Kakaki24)
While southern states like Delta, Enugu, and Oyo have previously established online chapels, Kano’s initiative sets a precedent for Northern Nigeria, formally recognizing the growing influence and importance of online journalism within the 70-year-old NUJ structure.
