Open Letter to the Citizens of Edo State: A Call for Transparency and Participatory Governance

By Usman A. Harande
18th November,2024Dear Edo People,As our beloved state embarks on a new political journey under the leadership of His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, we stand at a critical juncture that demands reflection, dialogue, and action. The Governor’s recent assumption of office, coupled with the unveiling of his ambitious five-point agenda, marks a significant moment for Edo State. However, critical questions persist—questions that deserve honest answers and clear solutions.
✓The People’s Concerns Must Take Center Stage:
Governor Okpebholo’s early appointments offer a glimpse into his vision for Edo State. While these moves may provide some insight into his priorities, they fall short of outlining how his administration intends to actively involve the citizens of Edo in governance. Participatory governance is not just a political ideal; it is the cornerstone of trust and effective leadership. At present, a defined framework for citizen engagement remains conspicuously absent.
✓Where is the Transparency in Transition?
The transition process has left many unanswered questions about the state’s current assets and liabilities. Citizens deserve a comprehensive audit and a public disclosure of Edo’s financial standing to understand how the administration plans to fund its ambitious agenda. Without transparency, the goals outlined in the five-point agenda risk being viewed as lofty aspirations without a clear roadmap for implementation.
✓A Call to Action:
Citizen Engagement is Key:In this era of uncertainty, it is imperative for the people of Edo to proactively engage with governance. The time has come to hold our leaders accountable by demanding transparency, inclusiveness, and a commitment to fulfilling campaign promises. We must advocate for open channels of communication between the government and its citizens to foster trust and collaboration.
✓Our Shared Future Lies in Our Hands:
Edo’s progress depends on a governance model that prioritizes the voices of its people. Let us seize this moment to shape a future that reflects our collective aspirations. Together, we can create a state where every citizen’s voice matters, and accountability is not optional but essential.
