In a significant diplomatic move, President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to participate in the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government. The President was warmly received at the airport by Ethiopian Deputy Chief of Protocol Eshetu Legesse, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian embassy in Ethiopia Ambassador Nasir Aminu.

Ambassador Tuggar briefed President Tinubu on the summit’s agenda and Nigeria’s diplomatic achievements, including the re-election of Ambassador Bankole Adeoye as African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. Nigeria also retained its seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council, reaffirming its commitment to peace and security on the continent.

Minister of Defence Muhammad Badaru Abubakar in Attendance

Minister of Defence Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, a seasoned politician and former governor of Jigawa State, was among the dignitaries who accompanied President Tinubu to the summit. Abubakar has been instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s defence strategy and has worked closely with President Tinubu to address the country’s security challenges.

AU Summit Focuses on Reparatory Justice and Racial Healing

This year’s AU summit, themed “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” aims to address issues of reparatory justice and racial healing. President Tinubu will deliver a speech at the Summit-level meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council, where discussions will focus on current security challenges on the continent, including the escalation of conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

President Tinubu’s Agenda at the Summit

During the summit, President Tinubu will participate in meetings on health financing, establishing an Africa Credit Rating Agency, and climate change. His attendance at the summit underscores Nigeria’s commitment to African unity and cooperation.

President Tinubu is expected to return to Abuja on Monday, February 17, after completing his engagements at the AU summit.
