KATSINA, NIGERIA – May 3, 2025 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu issued a powerful directive to the Nigerian military on Friday, demanding an intensified push to end the pervasive threats of terrorism and banditry across the nation.1 Addressing troops directly in Katsina State, the President declared the current security challenges a “defining moment” and vowed that Nigeria “will not surrender” to extremist forces, while promising robust support and prioritized welfare for soldiers.
During a two-day visit to Katsina, which also included the inauguration of key infrastructure projects, President Tinubu spoke to members of the 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army. He framed the ongoing conflict as critical to the nation’s future.
“My dear soldiers… the threats of terrorism, banditry, and insurgency have persisted for too long,” President Tinubu stated, according to a State House press release.2 “Nigerians are counting on us and you to end this menace and reclaim every inch of our territory.”
In a direct challenge to the assembled troops, he asked, “Are you ready? Are you committed to ending this insecurity once and for all?… Let the enemies of Nigeria know—their time is up.”
Emphasizing the significance of their duty, Tinubu described the fight as more than territorial. “The fight you are waging here in Katsina and across the country is not just a battle for territory; it is a battle for the soul of Nigeria,” he said, praising the soldiers’ resilience and sacrifice.3
Acknowledging the cost of the conflict, the President pledged concrete action from his administration.4 “As your President, I will match your courage with action, investment, and unwavering support,” he assured the troops.
He detailed specific commitments aimed at boosting morale and welfare, stating, “Your welfare is my top priority.” President Tinubu confirmed that enhanced housing programmes, family support systems, comprehensive insurance coverage, prompt payment of allowances, guaranteed healthcare, and improved remuneration are being actively implemented.5
President Tinubu concluded his address with a strong warning to adversaries: “To those who seek to destabilise our nation… hear this: Nigeria will not bow.6 Not to fear. Not to terror. Not to treachery.”
He lauded the troops as the “shields of Nigeria,” expressing deep humility for their unwavering commitment to the nation’s peace and sovereignty.
