President Tinubu Mourns Victims of Niger Boat Accident, Orders Investigation

Tragedy struck on Tuesday night in Niger State’s Mokwa Local Government Area, where a boat carrying approximately 300 people, mostly women and children, capsized on the Gbajibo River.
President Tinubu’s Condolence
President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Niger State, expressing deep sorrow for the loss of life.
Rescue Efforts
– At least 150 people rescued
– 25 bodies recovered so far
– Emergency workers and local divers continue search and rescue operations
Presidential Directive
President Tinubu has directed the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to:
– Investigate the recent spate of boat accidents in Niger State and nationwide
– Devise strategies to prevent future incidents
– Expand surveillance of inland waters to ensure safety
– Prosecute boat operators violating the ban on night sailing
