Abuja, Nigeria – In a bid to promote transparency and accountability in the management of Nigeria’s natural resources, Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Nigeria, a global movement of civil society organizations, has reiterated its call on governments at all levels to increase their stewardship and accountability in the use of the country’s natural resource revenues.
At a press conference held at the K-Class Hotel in Abuja on June 25, 2025, Dr. Erisa Danladi, National Coordinator of PWYP Nigeria, emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the extractive sector, citing the ongoing global geopolitical tensions and the energy transition as significant factors that could impact Nigeria’s oil-based revenue flows.
PWYP Nigeria’s demands include:
√Increased transparency and accountability in the use of natural resource revenues
√A just and inclusive energy transition that does not compromise the livelihoods of extractive host communities
√Beneficial ownership and contract disclosure to protect and expand the public register
√Stronger civil-society capacity to turn raw data into real-world impact
The coalition also expressed concerns over the unregulated operations of foreign mining companies in several Nigerian communities, resulting in insecurity, and called for stronger implementation of governance frameworks in the mining sector.
PWYP Nigeria commended the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) on its growing role in driving transparency reforms in the extractive sector and the innovations in its reporting. The coalition also welcomed the change in leadership at the NNPC Ltd and urged the new leadership to expedite action in proactively supplying operational data.
Dr. Danladi emphasized the importance of partnership in achieving transparency and accountability in natural resource governance, inviting government agencies, private investors, development partners, the media, and citizens to join PWYP Nigeria in its pursuit of a just, inclusive, and accountable natural resource governance landscape.
PWYP Nigeria’s strategic plan will be launched on July 25, 2025, in Abuja and online, marking a significant milestone in the coalition’s efforts to promote transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s extractive sector.
