Dutse, Jigawa State – October 31, 2024 –
Hajiya Hauwa Umar Aliyu, a commissioner representing Jigawa State at the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), recently held a closed-door meeting with the 27 local government chairmen of the state. The two-hour meeting, which took place at the local government secretariat in Dutse, also included the chairman of the state’s Board of Internal Revenue.
While the commissioner declined to comment on the specific details of the meeting, she confirmed that it was aimed at strengthening the relationship between the RMAFC and the local government councils in Jigawa State. Hajiya Hauwa emphasized that the meeting was not directly linked to the ongoing discussions about local government financial autonomy.
“Part of my role is to engage with local governments, build strong relationships, and provide support and advice as needed,” she explained. “This meeting was an opportunity to inform them about the RMAFC’s activities and address any concerns they may have.”
The commissioner’s visit to Jigawa State comes amidst the national debate on granting financial autonomy to local governments. While the meeting did not explicitly focus on this issue, it underscores the importance of effective communication and collaboration between federal and state authorities, as well as local government councils, in ensuring fiscal transparency and accountability.
