The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following his screening at the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday.
Professor Amupitan, a renowned Professor of Law from the University of Jos, arrived at the National Assembly complex earlier in the day, where he exchanged pleasantries with lawmakers before proceeding to the Senate chamber. He was accompanied by the Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Ododo, and other dignitaries.
At about 12:50 p.m., the nominee was ushered into the Senate chamber by the Presidential Adviser on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Abubakar Lado, and took his seat ahead of the screening session.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio welcomed Professor Amupitan, his family members, and other well-wishers to the Red Chamber, expressing appreciation for their presence. The screening commenced at 12:55 p.m., with Akpabio outlining the procedures to guide the lawmakers’ consideration of the nominee’s qualifications and experience.
Professor Amupitan’s nomination was earlier forwarded to the Senate by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following the resignation of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who had served as INEC Chairman since 2015.
The confirmation of Professor Amupitan marks a new phase for Nigeria’s electoral body, as expectations rise for continued reforms and strengthening of democratic processes across the country.
