Senator Natasha Reacts to Her Suspension: “This Injustice Will Not Be Sustained”

By Usman A Harande
In a dramatic turn of events, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has been suspended from the Nigerian Senate for six months, effective March 6, 2025. The suspension was announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who cited the recommendations of the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct.
The committee found Senator Natasha guilty of violating Senate rules, specifically for bringing the presiding officer and the entire Nigerian Senate to public opprobrium. The suspension comes with additional penalties, including:
- Withdrawal of Salary and Security Details: Her salary and those of her legislative aides will be withdrawn during the suspension period.
- Ban from National Assembly Premises: She is barred from accessing the National Assembly premises.
- Closure of Senate Office: Her Senate office will remain sealed.
- Loss of Legislative Privileges: She will be prohibited from representing Nigeria in any official capacity as a senator of the Federal Republic during the suspension.
In a defiant response, Senator Natasha declared, “This injustice will not be sustained” ¹. The Senate has, however, left the door open for reconciliation, ruling that the suspension could be lifted or reduced if Senator Natasha submits a written apology.
This development marks the latest escalation in the ongoing tensions between Senator Natasha and the Senate leadership. As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear: the Nigerian Senate has sent a strong message about its expectations for senatorial conduct.
