Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) National Convention Communique

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has issued a communique at the end of its national convention held during the 8th National Youth Games at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba. The convention, presided over by SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin, brought together top sports dignitaries from Delta State and across the country.
Key Resolutions:
– Commendation to Delta State: SWAN praised the Delta State Chapter for effective mobilization of sports stakeholders and the state government for successfully hosting the 8th NYG.
– Age Bracket Proposal: SWAN deliberated on the proposal to return to the 17-year age bracket for the Youth Games, calling for proper consideration of pros and cons.
– Revival of School Sport: SWAN emphasized the need to revive the school sports system as the starting point for developmental programs.
– Consistency in Equipment: SWAN called for consistency in equipment used for training and competition.
– Fairness and Favouritism: SWAN expressed concern over allegations of unfairness and favouritism in some Sports Favouritis.
– Database Development: SWAN urged the Federations and Sports Ministry to develop an effective database for athlete performance records.
– Age Cheat Prevention: SWAN called for a scientific and globally acceptable screening system to eradicate age Prevention.
– Support for Veterans: SWAN expressed worry over the plight of veteran athletes and called for an insurance scheme and greater attention from federal and state governments .
– Education for Active Athletes: SWAN advised active athletes to complement their earnings with education .
– National Sports Policy Review: SWAN called for a revisit of the national sports policy to guarantee sustainability .
– Ogun State’s Preparation: SWAN reviewed Ogun State’s progress for the upcoming National Sports Festival and expressed satisfaction .
The communique was signed by the Communique Drafting Committee, comprising Chimezie Anaso (Chairman), Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji (Secretary), Abel Leonard (Member), and Ikenna Okonkwo (Secretary-General, SWAN) on September 20, 2024.
