Police Warns Against “Ill-Timed” Nationwide Protest on National Police Day
Abuja, Nigeria – April 6, 2025 – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong caution against a planned nationwide protest by the “Take it Back Movement,” scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2025. This date coincides with the inaugural National Police Day, a day designated by the Federal Government to honor the dedication and resilience of Nigerian police officers.
The NPF, while acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly, expressed deep concern over the timing of the planned protest. The force highlighted that National Police Day is a significant event, expected to attract international dignitaries, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats.1
“The decision to stage a nationwide protest on the same day we celebrate the contributions of our officers is highly questionable,” stated ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer. “It is perceived as a deliberate and unpatriotic attempt to tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation as a whole.”
Key Points Highlighted:
- National Police Day: April 7th is a day dedicated to celebrating the NPF.2
- Timing Concern: Police express concern over the protest’s timing, coinciding with the national celebration.
- International Guests: The event is expected to host foreign dignitaries.
- Image Concerns: Police fear the protest could negatively impact the force’s and nation’s image.
The NPF emphasized that the Federal Government’s decision to establish National Police Day aligns with global best practices in recognizing the achievements of police institutions. They urged the organizers of the protest to reconsider their plans, describing them as “ill-timed and mischievous.”
“Instead of taking to the streets, we urge the organizers and those intending to participate to engage in constructive dialogue,” Adejobi said. “The proper government institutions are available to address their concerns.”
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, reaffirmed the NPF’s commitment to upholding the law and respecting citizens’ rights.3 He called for a peaceful resolution and encouraged the organizers to pursue dialogue rather than confrontation.
Conclusion:
The Nigeria Police Force is calling for calm and urging the “Take it Back Movement” to reconsider the timing of their planned protest. The force emphasizes the importance of celebrating National Police Day and encourages dialogue to address any grievances.4
