In a bold step toward enhancing civic participation and political consciousness, The Alternative Movement, led by its Chief Convener, Dr. Otunba Segun Showunmi, held a landmark Town Hall Meeting in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital.

The event, themed “Reclaiming Our Voice: The Power of the Informed Citizen,” served as a vibrant platform for citizens to engage on governance, accountability, and active political involvement. Participants drawn from various sectors of society deliberated on how informed civic participation can drive meaningful change in Nigeria’s democracy.

In his keynote address, Dr. Showunmi reaffirmed the movement’s vision to provide Nigerians with a credible political alternative centered on people’s welfare and national development.

“Our gathering here in Dutse is a testament to our firm belief that the power to shape Nigeria’s destiny lies with its people. We are not here merely to criticize but to construct—to educate, empower, and inspire citizens to hold their leaders accountable. The journey toward a new Nigeria begins with an informed and active citizenry,” he stated.

The Jigawa State Coordinator of The Alternative Movement, Aminu Ashiru Kwalam, explained that the town hall was organized to deepen political awareness and encourage citizens to take ownership of the country’s future. He noted that the initiative forms part of a broader effort to promote inclusive political dialogue and foster responsible participation ahead of future elections.

The forum attracted a diverse range of stakeholders, including civic leaders, government officials, and representatives of marginalized groups. Notable attendees included:

  • Adamu Shuaibu Jigawar Tsada, Chairman, Association of Persons with Disabilities, who called for more inclusive governance and accessible political structures.
  • Mallam Ahmed, Director, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Jigawa State, who reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to promoting civic education and national values.
  • Comrade Muhammad Musbahu Basirka, Chairman, Coalition of Civil Society Organizations in Jigawa, who underscored the role of civil society in strengthening democracy and advancing social justice.
  • Alhaji Rabi’u Dangabi Kwalam, a prominent politician and businessman, who emphasized the need for economic empowerment as a foundation for political stability.

Discussions at the event focused on voter education, participatory democracy, economic inclusion, and the need for greater transparency and accountability in governance.

The town hall concluded with a strong call for citizens to reclaim their voices, actively participate in governance, and contribute to building a more just and democratic Nigeria.
