ABUJA, NIGERIA – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 73rd birthday celebration at the Presidential Villa turned into a candid reflection on his political journey, marked by moments of doubt and decisive action. In a special Iftar gathering, the President expressed profound gratitude to Nigerians for their unwavering support and prayers, revealing a near-quit moment during the 2023 presidential campaign.
The event, attended by key figures including First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and numerous government officials, diplomats, and business leaders, highlighted the President’s resilience and commitment to Nigeria’s progress.
President Tinubu recounted a pivotal moment when financial strain during the campaign led him to question his pursuit of the presidency. “Those close to me know that the odds were against me,” he shared, describing a late-night encounter that almost derailed his ambition. However, he credited key supporters, including Aminu Masari, for urging him to persevere.
“When I came to Abuja, Masari told me, ‘I am the Chairman of the North West Group; don’t look back,'” Tinubu revealed, emphasizing the critical encouragement he received.
His address also addressed the challenging economic decisions he made upon assuming office, notably the removal of the fuel subsidy. “On the day of my inauguration, I had to decide on something not originally in my speech, and that was the fuel subsidy removal,” he stated, acknowledging the public backlash but affirming the necessity of the decision for Nigeria’s future.
“The hallmark of a great leader is the ability to make the right decision at the right time,” Tinubu asserted, highlighting his resolve in implementing reforms despite initial criticism.
Vice President Kashim Shettima lauded President Tinubu’s courage, stating that his bold actions would alleviate future leaders from grappling with similar challenges. “Asiwaju has taken the bullets that many before him simply lacked the courage to face,” Shettima remarked, praising his commitment to national progress.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the President’s forgiving nature and visionary leadership, describing him as “the most audacious president” in Nigeria’s history. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu emphasized Tinubu’s role in breaking barriers and uplifting future politicians, highlighting his inclusive leadership.
Governor Hope Uzodinma and Minister Dr. Bosun Tijjani also shared testimonials, emphasizing the President’s decisive leadership and reformist approach. Dr. Tijjani recounted a World Bank official’s recognition of Tinubu as “the best reformist leader in Africa today.”
Childhood friend Professor Shaffideen Adeniyi Amuwo reflected on their early years, linking Tinubu’s journey to divine providence. “Allah has shown His greatness by guiding him to lead Nigeria,” Amuwo stated.
This birthday celebration not only marked a personal milestone for President Tinubu but also served as a moment of reflection on his administration’s bold reforms and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s development.
