Kaduna, Nigeria – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has pledged its unwavering support to Jigawa State in addressing the high rate of out-of-school children.

UNICEF’s Chief of Kano Field Office, Rahma Farah, made this commitment during a one-day meeting with members of the Jigawa State House of Assembly in Kaduna. Farah emphasized the alarming number of children who are not attending school in the state and called for collective action to address this issue.

The UNICEF representative commended the Jigawa State House of Assembly for its efforts in promoting education in the state, noting that the assembly has passed seven education-related laws since its establishment. Farah also acknowledged the commitment of the current administration in creating separate ministries for basic education, higher education, and other education agencies.

In response, Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Haruna Dangyatun, expressed gratitude for UNICEF’s interventions in the state and pledged the assembly’s support in addressing issues that hinder educational progress. He highlighted the positive developments achieved in Jigawa with the assistance of UNICEF and other development partners.

According to Radio Nigeria, UNICEF is currently supporting the Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in its 2024 constituency-based commitment to reduce the number of out-of-school children.
