UNLOCKING DEMOCRACY’S POWER: EMPOWERING CITIZENS, PROMPTING INCLUSIVITY

Democracy’s Power: A Strong Force for the People, By the People, and For the People
By Dr. Abbati Bako, Political Strategy and Communications Consultant, IPRC Nigeria
In a democratic society, diverse non-governmental groups and institutions thrive, addressing social needs and demonstrating democracy’s inclusive nature. These bodies, including families, religious associations, trade unions, and political parties, showcase democracy’s openness and transparency, where power resides with the people.
As Prof. Attahiru M. Jega defines it, democracy encompasses institutions allowing citizens to choose leaders through competitive elections, held under the rule of law, with guarantees for political freedom and limited military influence. Prof. Paul Collier emphasizes rewarding honesty and competence in democratic elections to ensure honest leaders prevail, warning that dishonesty can lead to declining trust and rising unscrupulous candidates.
Tatah Mentan’s book “Held Together By Pins: Democracy Under Siege In Africa” critiques African democracies, highlighting concerns about authoritarian regression, democratization depth, quality, fairness, and completeness. Even the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti acknowledged democracy’s flaws but participated in the electoral process.
In conclusion, democracy’s power lies in empowering citizens, promoting inclusivity, and holding leaders accountable. As a political strategy consultant, I stress the importance of nurturing and protecting democratic institutions for a brighter future.
