Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on the Nigerian judiciary to remain unwavering in its commitment to justice, despite facing blackmail and pressure from various interests. He emphasized that the judiciary is a critical pillar of the country’s sovereignty, and its integrity is essential for maintaining order and stability.

Speaking at the maiden Body of Benchers Annual Lecture in Abuja, VP Shettima cautioned judges and legal practitioners against compromising their values and principles. He reminded them that justice is not a mere technicality, but the foundation of civilization.

“The expectations are high, and the temptations are many,” VP Shettima said. “Yet, I urge you, my lords, to remain steadfast. Justice is not a cloistered virtue; it must be allowed to suffer the scrutiny of reasonable men.”

The Vice President also commended the Body of Benchers for its commitment to legal scholarship and the preservation of precedent. He urged all legal practitioners to remain true to the ideals of honesty and fairness, emphasizing that their legacy will outlive their titles and offices.

Other dignitaries who spoke at the event included the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola (SAN). The event also featured the public presentation of the report of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee.
