Abuja, Nigeria – Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has publicly lauded the recent endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by former Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and his successor, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori. Wike asserts that this move vindicates his own political stance during the 2023 presidential election, a stance he claims was rooted in prioritizing national unity.

“Dr. Okowa’s open endorsement of President Tinubu, particularly given his past role as Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s running mate, reinforces the position I held in 2023,” Wike stated. “My decision then was driven by a deep commitment to a unified Nigeria.”

Wike further commended both Okowa and Oborevwori for what he characterized as a “heart-warming decision,” attributing it to their recognition of President Tinubu’s commitment to “good governance” and national development.

“This is the kind of forthrightness I’ve consistently advocated,” Wike emphasized. “It’s about demonstrating support at the opportune moment, not resorting to political maneuvering only when faced with adversity.”

He highlighted the strategic importance of this endorsement for the Niger Delta region, suggesting it would pave the way for increased benefits from the federal government. “By aligning with the President at this juncture, they’re ensuring that the people of the Niger Delta stand to gain more,” he asserted.

Wike concluded by expressing his personal satisfaction, stating, “I’m particularly pleased that the vision I held during the 2023 election is now being shared by others, who are choosing to join the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda.”

Analysis: Political Realignment and Regional Dynamics

Wike’s reaction underscores the shifting political landscape in Nigeria, particularly within the Niger Delta region. Okowa’s endorsement, given his previous affiliation with the opposition, represents a significant development. Wike’s claim of vindication highlights the ongoing power dynamics and political calculations that often shape Nigerian politics.

The FCT Minister’s emphasis on national unity and regional benefits reflects a strategy of framing political alliances within a broader context of national development. By positioning the endorsement as a move that will benefit the Niger Delta, he aims to garner support and minimize potential backlash.

However, the timing and motivations behind Okowa’s endorsement remain subject to speculation. Questions arise regarding the potential influence of federal government incentives and the long-term implications for regional political alignments.

This episode serves as a reminder of the fluidity of Nigerian politics, where alliances can shift and evolve based on perceived interests and opportunities. Wike’s vocal response underscores his continued influence and his ability to shape the narrative surrounding these political developments. The public and political observers will be watching closely to see how this endorsement impacts the political landscape in the Niger Delta and the broader national political arena.
