Zamfara Governor Mourns Tragic Gummi Boat Accident, Orders Swift Emergency Response

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has expressed deep sorrow over a devastating boat accident that occurred in Gummi Local Government Area, resulting in the tragic loss of over 40 lives.

The incident happened early Sunday when a boat carrying more than 40 passengers capsized in the Bakin Kasuwa River, located in Uban Dawaki Ward, Gummi. The boat reportedly lost control before the tragic accident, leading to the significant loss of lives.

In an official statement issued by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, Governor Lawal referred to the boat mishap as a “monumental disaster” and expressed profound grief over the tragic incident.

The governor has directed the Zamfara State Emergency Management Agency (ZEMA) to immediately launch rescue and recovery operations at the site of the accident. He further instructed the Commissioner for Humanitarian and Relief Matters to oversee all efforts aimed at delivering immediate relief to affected families.

“We received the heartbreaking news of the boat accident at Bakin Kasuwa River in Gummi Local Government, which led to the loss of over 40 lives,” the statement read.

“Governor Lawal has ordered ZEMA to assess the situation and provide urgent support to victims. He has also tasked the Commissioner for Humanitarian and Relief Matters with coordinating relief efforts.”

Governor Lawal extended his condolences to the grieving families, offering prayers for the souls of the departed. He also reassured the public of the state government’s commitment to improving safety measures to prevent future accidents of this nature.

Preventing Future Tragedies

In light of the accident, the governor reiterated the need for strict safety regulations and oversight on water transport systems across the state to avoid a repeat of such tragedies. He assured the people of Zamfara that the government will take immediate steps to improve safety infrastructure, particularly in riverine areas prone to such accidents.
