African Union Expresses Concern as Somalia Government, Opposition Talks End Without Agreement

The African Union Commission has expressed concern over the outcome of recent high-level political negotiations in Somalia after talks between the Federal Government and opposition representatives ended without reaching a consensus.

In a statement issued after the negotiations held in Mogadishu from May 13 to 15, 2026, the Commission said it closely monitored discussions between the Somali government and members of the Somali Future Council but regretted that the dialogue concluded without agreement.

The Commission, however, commended both the Federal Government led by Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the opposition leadership for demonstrating willingness to engage in direct and inclusive dialogue aimed at safeguarding the interests of Somalia and its citizens.

The African Union warned against deepening political divisions and urged all stakeholders to urgently return to the negotiation table through constructive engagement, mutual compromise, and respect for constitutional order.

“The Commission cautions against the entrenchment of divergent positions and calls upon all political stakeholders to promptly recommit to an inclusive and substantive political dialogue,” the statement noted.

The AU Commission further reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace and stability efforts in Somalia through the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), while also acknowledging the mediation roles played by the United Nations, the African Union, and international partners.

It called for sustained diplomatic engagement by the international community to help reconcile political differences and strengthen stability in the Horn of Africa nation.

The political talks were widely seen as critical to Somalia’s democratic process and national unity amid ongoing security and governance challenges.
